Why Does My Car Pull to One Side?

By the Auto Repair Home service team· Reviewed by an ASE-certified technician· Updated October 2026· 2 min read

The short answer

A car that pulls to one side usually has a wheel alignment problem or uneven tire pressure. If it only pulls when braking, the cause is more likely a sticking brake caliper or collapsed brake hose.

Why Does My Car Pull to One Side?

Check tire pressure first

Low pressure on one side causes pulling. Austin's temperature swings change tire pressure by 1 PSI per 10°F.

Road crown

Roads are slightly crowned for drainage, so a slight drift right can be normal.

Alignment

Potholes and curbs knock alignment out. A 4-wheel alignment costs $99–$149.
